On Friday the 9th of February we will find out whether pre-exposure prophylaxis will be approved for federal subsidy. This would bring the price of the daily preventative drug that reduces the risk of HIV infection down to an affordable cost of many Australians.
Although the decision is announced on Friday, on Wednesday evening, Fairfax Media reported that that a positive decision was ‘almost certain’.
On this episode of The Informer on the eve of the announcement, we focus on what will happen if PrEP is subsidised.
Are we ready for the demand clinically?
How will people continue to manage their sexual health and remain informed?
What happens to those already on the PrEP trials?
And what have peoples experiences been like taking PrEP in Australia?
We speak to Simon Ruth, CEO of the Victorian AIDS Council; Nic Holas, co-founder of TIM (The Institute of Many), Martin Holt, Professor at the Centre for Social Research in Health at the University of NSW, Michael Whelan from PrEP Access Now and Chris Williams from PrEP’d for Change.
This episode of The Informer was hosted by Dylan Joel and aired on JOY 94.9 on 8th February 2018.
