Living and Learning from our LGBTI Elders : 9th October 2017

We open this episode with audio of Victoria’s Gender and Sexuality Commissioner Ro Allen speaking at The Coming Back Out Ball this Saturday, where LGBTI elders and allies came out to celebrate living their queer life proudly.

On this episode we look at the elderly spectrum of our rainbow community, as well as support and information services that help make our elderly community stronger, and remind us all of the relevance of their stories and lived experiences.

Lara and Dean are joined in the studio by Catherine Barrett from Alice’s Garage who has created Abundence a story pantry affirming Transgender and Gender Diverse ageing, and Justin Young, whom signed up as a helper as a part of Switchboard Victoria’s Out and About project, where peer volunteers make regular visits to people who are receiving Home Care Packages or living in government funded residential aged care.

JOY volunteer Toni Paynter about their involvement with Abundence, and what this has meant as a part of their journey

And we speak to the organizer of the Coming Back Out Ball, Tristain Meecham speaking to us earlier today about the fabulous event which celebrated our LGBTIQ elders on the weekend.

Finally, in 1977 two lesbians who were convicted with offensive behavior for holding hands on a tram. And on Wednesday lesbian elder will board a tram in Melbourne’s CBD and hold hands as a show of solidarity and recognition of the 1977 incident.

This important event in our history highlights the need to understand lesbian historical experiences and celebrate their strategies for resistance. And LGBTI community members and allies are invited to meet at the State Library at 1pm to support the lesbian elders on their journey as well as older lesbians to join the tram ride.

If you can’t be there – please join the social media campaign by taking a photo of two women holding hands and post with the #womenholdinghands
