Australian Christian Lobby managing director Lyle Shelton joins The Informer to defend religious exemptions in the federal Sex Discrimination Act, which enable private schools to fire gay teachers or a teacher who has a child out of wedlock on religious grounds. The laws also enable faith-based homeless shelters to turn away trans people.

The Australian Greens recently urged the Labor party to remove the exemption in light of there being no clear commitment to do so on Labor’s part. But Labor has said it won’t budge on them.

Meanwhile, the Liberal party has also told The Informer in a statement that it will not support removing the exemptions either.

The Informer also speaks with director of advocacy at the Human Rights Law Centre, Anna Brown, about her thoughts on the exemptions, and why she believes we need law reform.

And, in a podcast exclusive, we talk with Australian Greens’ sexuality spokesperson, Senator Robert Simms, about his push to remove the exemptions.
