A long-time Labor electorate, the Federal seat of Batman in Melbourne’s north is predicted to be in close battle with the Greens in the Federal election on July 2.

Meanwhile candidates from minor parties contesting the seat are putting in the hard yards with the aim of shaping the Australian political and social landscape.

Emma Arnold speaks with Animal Justice Party candidate Caitlin Evans who says LGBTI rights fit within her personal and party values.

“Of course I’m supportive, what rational, kind person who favours equality could not be supportive,” says Evans.

Stephanie McLean chats to Australian Sex Party candidate Joel Murray about his party’s policy on LGBTI rights and discrimination, including a proposal to de-fund religious organisations that discriminate based on religious values.

“Organisations that choose to discriminate because of their religious affiliations should not be able to receive public funding,” Murray says.

The girls also take to the streets of Northcote to find out what Batman constituents are considering in the lead up to the election.
