Melbourne is in the midst of a crisis regarding the availability of affordable housing. There has been a massive increase in the numbers of people sleeping rough on the streets of the CBD each night. How many of these people are from the LGBTI communities? No-one knows!
Tony Keenan, CEO of Launch Housing, joins us on The Informer to discuss a new project that has been funded to find out how many homeless people are LGBTI.
- If you have a housing crisis and are homeless call 1800 825 955
- Women in crisis from Family Violence can call 1800 015 188 (24hrs).
Then the Burnet Institute’s Head of HIV Research and Principal for Sexual Health and Reproductive Research, Associate Professor Mark Stoové joins Dean Beck to discuss HIV self-tests. Home test kits have been available throughout Europe and the USA for many years and Australia passed legislation over 12 months ago that would enable companies to submit these devices to the Therapeutic Goods Administration for approval.
It is estimated that 10,000 gay and bisexual men have NEVER been tested for HIV and it is believed self-tests would assist many of these people. Dr Stoové believes local research is urgently needed.
What do you think of Victoria’s HIV Prevention Campaigns?
Burnet Institute is undertaking an evaluation of Victorian HIV and STI prevention social marketing campaigns targeting gay and bisexual men on behalf of the Victorian Department of Health. They need YOUR help – contribute to this important survey today!
