Show 266

+Key West by The Village People. I got this CD from a Canadian guy who won it last year along with tix to see them at The Zoo. Who knew?? It’s a 1978 track from Macho Man.

Barbara’s Song by Y Pants. All-female No Wave band from New York City active from 1979 to 1982. The trio, made up of photographer/musician Barbara Ess, visual artist Virginia Piersol, and filmmaker Gail Vachon, developed a unique sound via their acoustic toy instrumentation of toy piano, ukulele and a paper-headed Mickey Mouse drum kit, augmented by electric bass guitar, Casio keyboards and various low-tech effects. This is a cover of a track from the Kurt Veil/Bertolt Brecht “threepenny opera” and issued on their only LP, Beat it Down from 1982.

Erotiko by Eleuthera Arvanitaki. Request.

Pack it Up by The Pretenders. Request.

*April Sun in Cuba by Dragon. Request.

Don’t Speak by No Doubt. 1995 single from Tragic Kingdom. I loved this song at the time.

Just Call by Sherrick. Request.

Do it to the Music by Raw Silk. Request.

Clown Strike by Elvis Costello. From his 1994 album, Brutal Youth

Aussies for summer

*+First day of summer by Sea Stories. LGBTIQ because Robyn Clark of Sweet Jayne and Party Girls fame was the drummer. They existed from 1986-93. This is from their 3rd and final album, Wide Eyed & Dreaming, 1991.

*The Lords of Summer by The Mark of Cain. Another new to me band! This is the title track to their 1988 debut album, which came out after they formed in Adelaide.

*It’s Almost Summer by Billy Thorpe. 1975 single released before its album, Pick Me Up & Play Me Loud came out in 1976. He died of a massive heart attack on 28 February 2007.

*One Summer by Daryl Braithwaite. 10th track on his 1988 solo album, Edge. Wasn’t released as a single till early the next year. It did fairly well here in Oz, reaching no. 8 on the charts. But even better in Sweden (4) and Norway (5). Guess those Scandinavian types like a song about summer…

*Summer of ’81 by Mondo Rock. From their second studio album, Chemistry, put out, of course, in 1981. Mondo Rock was a Melbourne band put together by Ross Wilson, who previously had been with Daddy Cool…and dined with Oprah at the swank family taco night when she was here in 2010.

*Summer Nights by Olivia Newton-John and John Travolta. Of course, from the Grease soundtrack in 1978.

I can See Myself Alone Forever by The Field Mice. 1989 track from this English indie rock band active from 1987-91.

Refugee by Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers. Released in January 1980 as the second single from their album Damn the Torpedoes, their third.

+Americanos by Holly Johnson. From his 1989 solo debut, Blast. He is, of course, the openly gay frontman from Frankie Goes to Hollywood, and prior to that the bassist from Big in Japan.

Fixing her Hair by Ani DiFranco. From her 1992 album, Imperfectly.

Free Your Mind by En Vogue. Request.
