+Smalltown Boy by Bronski Beat. This is their debut single, released in June 1984. It also appeared on the band’s debut album The Age of Consent, released in December 1984. It’s probably their best known track as well. Obviously, I get to tick the LGBTIQ box on this one given both the subject and the artists!
Sex Type Thing by Stone Temple Pilots. For Scott Weiland, their original lead vocalist, who died this week at just 48. Heart attack brought on by crack and cocaine use.
Happy Happy Joy Joy by Ren and Stimpy. Request.
Little Ants by DNA. This is the b-side to their only single release You and You from 1978. They did record a couple of albums, though, including a live at CBGBs album from 1993.
*If you leave me can I come too by Mental as Anything. Request.
Rain on the Scarecrow by John Mellencamp. Request.
Catch me I’m Falling by Pretty Poison. This is the only hit from this Philadelphia based band from the 80s…the year was 1987. Gay-activist Jade Starling is the frontwoman for the band and while she’s straight she spends most of her time when not recording, writing or producing working for same-sex legal rights in the US, including marriage.
Flesh for Fantasy by Billy Idol. 3rd 1984 single release from Rebel Yell, his second studio album as a solo artist, released in 1983.
Disco Connection by Isaac Hayes Movement. Request.
Just Git it Together by Lisa Lisa and Cult Jam. Single release from their third album, 1989’s Straight to the Sky. Lisa Lisa is Puerto Rican American Lisa Velez from Hell’s Kitchen in NYC.
Aussie Johnnys
*Don’t Need Love by Johnny Diesel and the Injectors. Mark Lizotte’s first band after leaving Innocent Bystanders, where he got his start. This is from their self-titled debut released in 1989 after recording in Nashville the previous year.
*Aggro by Johnny Dole and the Scabs. Their first original song. It was released on their only studio album, Scab Animal, from 1977.
*Motorbikin’ by The Johnny’s. Track from their second album, Grown up Wrong, released in 1988, the year before they broke up. They were a pub rock band from Sydney.
*I love you so Rebecca by Johnny Chester. 1979 single release from this country artist originally from Preston here in Melbourne.
*On the Road by Johnny O’Keefe. This is a 1975 track and one of his final singles before his death in 1978.
*I’m heading for L.A. by Johnny Devlin and Sailors. Song sponsored by Qantas for the 1984 LA Olympics.
I don’t Wanna Get Drafted by Frank Zappa. Request. 1980 non-album single.
The Channukah Song by Adam Sandler.
+Strobelight by The B52s. From 1980s Wild Planet, their second studio album, which, like their first, was recorded in the Bahamas. This song was a classic dance song when I was at university and required everybody to drop to the ground when they sang, “down, down, down…” ah, the good old days. It’s about the gayest of bands with all but 1 member, Cindy Wilson, having come out as gay or lesbian.
Don’t You Want Me by Jody Watley. Third single release from her 1987 self-titled debut album. The single was also from 87…as was her Grammy award for best new comer.
+Female Mudwrestling by Phranc. Aka Susan Gottlieb, lesbian muso from Santa Monica, CA. From Folksinger, Phranc’s first solo LP which fused elements of her punk rock past with acoustic folk music.
+Boat on the River by Styx. Single from their 9th studio album, Cornerstone, from 1979. It was released as a single in 1980, but didn’t chart in the United States. However, it was popular in several German-speaking countries, becoming a top-five hit on the German, Austrian and even no. 1 on the Swiss charts. Chuck Panozzo is their openly gay bass player and vocalist.
I’ll be Good by Rene and Angela (played just 1 minute). (Jimmy) René Moore and Angela Winbush are artist/producers who recorded four album: their 1980 self-titled debut, the second album Wall to Wall in 1981 and their final album for the label, 1983’s Rise…all from Capitol. In 1985 they switched to Mercury and put out a final album, Street Called Desire, from which this single was released that same year.
