Nightshift by The Names. They were a post-punk band from Brussels, formed in 1978. This was released in 1981 as a 7” single.
+Supermodel by Jill Sobule. From the 1995 soundtrack to Clueless. She’s, of course, the woman who brought us the first song called I Kissed a Girl and is herself a lesbian.
Eisbaer by Grauzone. Or, in English, Polar Bear by Grey Area. They were a Swiss band from Berne, active only from 1980-82. This was their biggest hit, 12 in Germany, 6 in Austria…it’s from 1981.
Give up the Funk by Parliament. Request.
Don’t Start a Fire by Janice Bullock. Request.
You’re puttin’ a rish on me by Stephanie Mills. Request.
Romantic Me by Polyrock. First track on their self-titled debut from 1980. It featured Philip Glass on keyboards; he also produced most of the band’s work. They were from NYC.
+Blue Kiss by Jane Wiedlin. The openly bisexual guitarist from the Go Gos in one of her solo tracks from her 1985 self-titled album.
Alphabet Street by Prince. 1988 track on Lovesexy.
Aussies that are new to me… a lot of funk thanks to the guy who writes the Aussie Funk Blogspot. And I’ve got 6 more new ones for next week!
*The World’s Greatest Mum by Johnny Chester and Hotspur. Their 1979 mother’s day classic. I’ve played Chester as a solo artist but here he is with his band.
*It Hurts So Good by Marcie Jones. 1975 B-side for this Melbourne singer best known as half of Marcie & the Cookies from the 1960s.
*Feelin’ Funky by The Silver Bump Band. Aussie funk from 1976. They were from Tassie and made up of Ross Sutton on drums, Robyn Moore on vocals, Ian Clyne on piano, and probably Lynn Thomas on guitar since he also composed the tune.
*Dry Country by The Col Nolan Quartet. 1977 cover of a cover of a 1976 funk jam track by famous funky Swedish flautist Jayson Lindh. And if you’ve heard of any of these people, good on ya!
*Pick up the Pieces by The Discoettes. In 1976 a bunch of unknown Aussie studio musos were hired to record an album worth of covers. This is one of them. Enjoy!
*Good King Wenceslas by The Claire Poole Singers. I know, a bit late for an xmas tune. But it’s also a funk tune and my partner loved it so here it is…from 1975. Oddly…no singing.
I Was Made for Dancin’ by Leif Garrett. Request.
Saturday Night, Sunday Morning by Thelma Houston. 1979 single from Ride to the Rainbow, her 8th studio album. Ray tells me she’s openly gay but I can’t find any references…she’s certainly an activist. Her official FB page tells me that, no, she’s not a lesbian: https://www.facebook.com/Thelmahoustonofficial/posts/573687486133715?comment_id=573975319438265¬if_t=feed_comment
New Dark Age by The Sound. From their second album, The Lion’s Mouth, from 1981. They were an English post-punk band from S London active from 1979-88. Never had much commercial success but released 6 full studio albums and a bunch of Eps, singles, compilations and live albums…so were really busy!
Mondlicht by Xmal Deutschland. All-female band from Hamburg in W Germany, active from 1980-89. This was the first track on their second album, Tocsin, released in 1984.
+VanGogh 6: Struggle and Sting by Van Gogh’s Daughter. SF lesbian band from their only album, Shove.
Things we Never Did by Sad Lovers and Giants. I think it’s from 1982 and their debut album, Epic Garden Music…however, Wikipedia doesn’t include this track on their listing for that album. Anybody know? They were English.
Julia by Asylum Party. They were a French band…listed as post punk, cold wave and gothic rock…which is it?? Perhaps a bit of all… This is from their 1988 album, Picture One.
