Playlists

Show 267

Eat the Rich by Motorhead. They lost their lead singer, Lemmy Kilmister, on Boxing Day. He was 70 and died of cancer. 1987 single from Rock ‘n Roll, their 8th studio album.

Pink Cadillac by Natalie Cole. She died this past week of congestive heart failure; she was just 65. This is a 1988 single from her 1987 album, Everlasting.

Hot Summer Nights by Night. Request.

Moving on Up by M People. Request.

Freeway of Love by Aretha Franklin. Request.

Fond Affections by Rema-Rema. English music group, consisting of Gary Asquith, Marco Pirroni, Mick Allen, Mark Cox and Dorothy Max Prior (generally known only as “Max”). They only lasted a year or so in 1979-80. This track is from 1980.

+Nothing Special by Big in Japan. Thought I’d play them here as I’ve just learned about the Holly Johnson link…making them an LGBTIQ band! This is from their 1978 EP, From Y to Z and Never Again. They were from Merseyside in the UK, which also brought us Echo & the Bunnymen, The Teardrop Explodes, OMD, & Dalek I Love You…coming up soon.

Doubleplusgood by The Eurythmics. Came out the year I saw them up in Canada, from the soundtrack to 1984.

Hammer the Halo by The Wolfgang Press. From their 1986 album, Standing up Straight. This is where 2 of Rema-Rema’s members, Allen and Cox, wound up.

Wasteland by The Mission. From their 1986 debut, God’s Own Medicine.

Aussies: Stevie Wright memorial

*Black Eyed Bruiser by Stevie Wright. Title track from his second solo album, released in 1975.

*Where were you? by Flash and the Pan. Stevie sang lead vocals on this 1982 track, having joined Vanda & Young yet again. They all started together in The Easybeats, of course.

*Evie parts 1-3 by Stevie Wright. 1987 live recording of his 1974 classic. It’s sort of one song, sort of 3. I’m counting it as 3 tonight since I’ve played part 1 in the distant past as its own song.

*Friday on My Mind by The Easybeats. Originally released in 1966, the band re-released the track in 1980. It only went to 92 on the Australian chart, after having been a smash #1 originally. But it means I get to play this version here in honour of Stevie, who died last week at the age of 68. He was their lead singer.

Holiday in Disneyland by Dalek I Love You. Same late 70s, early 80s Merseyside origins as Big in Japan, etc. This is from their second album, a self-titled affair from 1983.

+Deep Soul Diver by Disappear Fear. 1990 title track to their second album. ‘They’ are lesbian Sonia Rutstein and her sister Cindy Frank. Sonia has continued with the band, as well as some more recent solo work, while Cindy did the breeder thing and took time off for family.

I Remember Punk Rock by Vic Reeves. From his only album (his normal career is as a comedian), I Will Cure You, from 1991.

Ice Cream to God by Kitchen and the Plastic Spoons. Swedish 80s band that only held it together for a year and a half in 1980 and 81. This is the title track to their 3rd EP.

Hypnosis by Positive Noise. Track from their 1981 debut album, Heart of Darkness. They were a Scottish new wave band from Glasgow.
