Playlists

Show 294

It’s a heartache by Bonnie Tyler. From her 1978 album Natural Force, her second. I have to admit to really liking her voice.

Higher Ground by Stevie Wonder. Request.

Queen of Eyes by Soft Boys. From their 1980 album, Underwater Moonlight, their second. They were English and active as Soft Boys on and off from 1976-2003, though their leader, Robyn Hitchcock, certainly did other things during that time as well.

3 Times by Cat Power. From her 1995 debut album, Dear Sir. She’s an American indie artist who is also known as Chan Marshall.

Skank Blok Bologna by Scritti Politti. Their 1978 debut single, it was a non-album single.  They’re British, from Leeds in Yorkshire.

Love Plus One by Haircut 100. 1982 single, their second.

Understanding Jane by Icicle Works.  1986 single, the first, from If You Want to Defeat Your Enemy, Sing His Song.  The band was named after the 1960 short story “The Day the Icicle Works Closed” by science fiction author Frederik Pohl.  Icicle Works joined Liverpool’s early 1980s ‘neo-psychedelia’ wave, which also featured Echo & the Bunnymen and The Teardrop Explodes.

*Change by Kate Ceberano. Request.

Queer by Garbage. Request.

Doot Doot by Freur. This is their only hit, from 1983. They were Welsh, from Cardiff.

Aussies – solo work from people better known as band members

*Boys Do Fall in Love by Robin Gibb. 1984 single from Secret Agent, his third solo album. I had no idea he’d been putting out solo material from 1970 through 2014, 2 years after his death.

*The Passenger by Michael Hutchence: This is a third cover of this track, this one from Batman Forever in 1995. Siouxsie & The Banshees also did it in 1987.

*Sensual Motion by Alston Koch.  Koch migrated to Australia in 1969, having had a vibrant musical career in Sri Lanka for over a decade before that.  After moving to Australia, Alston formed a band by the name of Dark Tan.  They were very popular on the club circuit all over Australia & Asia in the mid to late 70s & developed into Australia’s leading disco group. This is a 1990 solo effort.

*The Maryborough Miner by James Reyne. Aussie folk track from an Australian collection called Going Home: Australian Artists, from 1993. Of course, he was with Australian Crawl until 1986.

*Concrete and Clay by Martin Plaza. Plaza is the pseudonym for Mental As Anything’s co-lead vocalist Martin Edward Murphy.  This is the hit single from his 1986 solo album ‘Plaza Suite’. It’s a cover version of the UK’s Unit Four Plus Two 1965 original.

*Saved Me by Jenny Morris. From the 1989 album Shiver, her second solo album.  Single did really well that year as well, finishing in Australian top 50. She fronted QED and got her start in Kiwi band The Crocodiles.

+Heaven Help Me by Deon Estus & George Michael. From the album, Spell, in 1989. He’s an American bassist and singer, best known as the bass player of Wham! and as the bassist on George Michael’s first two solo projects. This was from 1989.

+Outside Your Door by Me’Shell Ndegeocello. Request.

+Don’t go breaking my heart by Elton John and Ru Paul. Request.

+Evil is so Civilised by Boy George. Request.

+America by Prince. Request.

+I love Saturday by Erasure. Request.
