Playlists

Show 299. Bands from NY in honour of 9/11

Call Me by Blondie. 1980 single from the American Gigolo soundtrack.

+Transit Cop by Beastie Boys. Featuring lesbian drummer Kate Schellenbach, who was with them for their earliest years…but left before they hit it big in the mid-80s. This is from their 1982 EP Polly Wog Stew.

Got to Get you Into my Life by Blood, Sweat & Tears. 1975 single from New City, their 8th studio album, also from 1975. Sounding vaguely like Chicago, with the big horn section…

There’s Got to Be a Way by Mariah Carey. Request.

Gettysburg by The Brandos. Their first single, released in 1987.  Oddly, they released their last single in 1994 but continued to release albums, lots of them, till 2010.

Hey 19 by Steely Dan. Request.

My Adidas by Run DMC. Request.

I don’t want to grow up by The Ramones. Their 1995 single, their last.

Anything is Possible by Debbie Gibson. Request.

I was Made for Loving You by Kiss.  originally released on their 1979 album Dynasty. It was released as the A-side of their first single from the album. It was the band’s second Gold single in the US, selling over 1 million copies.  It also hit #1 here.  Paul Stanley, who co-wrote the song, has stated that it was a conscious effort on his part to prove how easy it was to write and record a hit disco song.

Aussies from Sydney I’ve never played before – to keep with the single city theme

*Ode to Nothing by The Lighthouse Keepers. Another Sydney band from the 1980s, formed in 1981. This is a 1985 single.

*Now You Know by Widdershins. Sydney band made up of some former members of The Lighthouse Keepers, Greg Appel and Juliet Ward. They only survived from late 1986 till early 1990. This is from 1987 and was their debut single.

*Mayhemic Destruction by Mortal Sin. Title track from their debut album, released in 1986…one year after they formed in Sydney. Thrash metal…featuring Wayne Campbell, Paul Carwana, Andy Eftichiou, Keith Krstin and Mat Maurer.

*Totem by Nazxul. Another Sydney metal band, whatever black metal is, from title track to their debut 1995 album. They’ve only released 2 albums since forming in 1993, this one from 95 and their second in 2009. Apparently they’re working on a third now.

*American TV by The Trilobites.  A number one hit for them on the Australian indie chart in 1986. They were Mike Dalton on vocals, Scott Leighton on bass guitar, Martin Martini & Paul Skates on guitars and Paul Styman on drums.

*Ravine by Crow. Not the American band from Minneapolis but the rock band from Sydney, formed in 1986. This is their 1990 debut single.

Maladie d’Amour by Kid Creole and the Coconuts. 1980 single from their first album, Off the Coast of Me.

Istanbul by They Might Be Giants. Their fourth single, released in 1990 from Flood, their third album.

Bi by Living Colour. 1993 single from Stain, their 3rd. Is it about being Bi?  I have no idea.

Youth Against Fascism by Sonic Youth. 1992 single from Dirty, their 8th studio album.

Jungle Boogie by 24-7 Spyz. From their 1989 debut album, Harder than You.

Wiggle It by 2 in a Room. 1990 single, their best known track. It was a gold record here in Australia and 1 on the US dance chart.

Big Ass by Alice Donut. From their 1991 12”, The Ass Trilogy, their second single release.
