Save Your Love by Renee & Renato. Renee is really Hilary Lester, who, together with Italian-born Renato Pagliari, took out the UK Christmas number 1 for 1982 and scored one of the top 10 highest-selling singles of 1983 in Australia.
*On the Inside by Lynne Hamilton. Request.
Metropolis by Kraftwerk. Request. 1978
Vogue by Madonna. Request.
Shiny Shiny by Haysi Fantayzee. 1983 minor hit. Haysi Fantayzee was British and comprised of Kate Garner, who’s now a multimedia artist, and Jeremy Healy, who went on to be involved in E-Zee Possee and have a successful career as a DJ.
When You Were Sweet Sixteen by The Fureys. Here’s a golden oldie given an update in 1983 – the original song dates back as far as 1898 and the remake was by Irish sibling folk group The Fureys, a version of which continues to perform today.
+Pienso en vos by Sandra Mihanovich. (thinking of you). The title track to her 1977 debut album. She’s Argentinean…and a lesbian.
+Why by Bronski Beat. Larry Steinbachek, the keyboardist, died this week, age just 56. He was diagnosed with an aggressive cancer not long ago. He was with Bronski Beat from beginning to end and then moved to Amsterdam in 1994 to work as a sessional musician and in stage musicals.
Aussies from 1978
*Colossus by Cybotron. The Aussie band…not the Detroit one of the same name. This is the title track of their 1978 album.
*Boys by Bleeding Hearts. From the album, What Happened, released in 1978. These guys are new to me and I can’t find anything else about them.
*You’re the One that I Want by Olivia Newton-John and John Travolta. From Grease in 1978.
*Are you old enough by Dragon. 1978 single from their fifth studio album, O Zambezi, also released in 78. They were formed in Auckland in 1972 but by 1975 were living and working in Sydney.
*Love is in the Air by John Paul Young. 1978 intl hit for this aussie artist … probably the only one those of you outside Oz have ever heard of. But he was big here and had frequent guest shots on Countdown.
*Khe Sanh by Cold Chisel. Originally named Orange, the band was formed in Adelaide in 1973 as a heavy metal act covering songs by Led Zeppelin and Deep Purple. Seventeen-year-old singer Jimmy Barnes – known throughout his time with the band as Jim Barnes — joined in December ’73, taking leave from the band in 1975 for a brief stint as Bon Scott’s replacement in Fraternity. The group changed its name several times before settling on Cold Chisel in 1974. Aus pulled out of VN in 1972, when Barnes was 16. This is a 1978 hit.
