Romantic Me by Polyrock. First track on their self-titled debut from 1980. It featured Philip Glass on keyboards; he also produced most of the band’s work. They were from NYC.
Be Happy by Mary J Blige. Request.
+Star Spangled Banner by Whitney Houston. Request. New film confirms her bisexuality so I’m giving her the LGBTI +.
Popcorn by M&H Band. Request.
+50 Ways to Leave your Lover by Sandra Bernhard. From the Lesbians Like Us compilation. I love this lesbian remake of the Paul Simon classic.
+2-4-6-8 Motorway by The Tom Robinson Band. British muso Robinson wrote the song between leaving Café Society in 1976, and forming the Tom Robinson Band in 1977, which they recorded it in their first year together. U2 also covered it in their early days…
+I’m a Runnin’ by Rufus Wainwright. He was a kid and it was 1988. Soundtrack from Tommy Tricker and the Stamp Traveller. He is, of course, openly gay.
Julia by Asylum Party. They were a French band…listed as post punk, cold wave and gothic rock…which is it?? Perhaps a bit of all… This is from their 1988 album, Picture One.
A Million Miles Away by The Plimsouls. 1983 single from the Valley Girl soundtrack, which allowed it to become a bit of an indie hit. It was also on their second album, Everywhere at Once, also from 1983. They formed in California in 1978 around members Peter Case, Dave Pahoa and Louie Ramirez.
If Only I could by Sydney Youngblood. Request from Ray about 3 years ago. From his 1989 album Feeling Free.
Saved by Zero by The Fixx. From their second album, Reach the Beach, released in 1983.
Aussies from 1979
*Conversations by The Boys Next Door. Live recording at the Tiger Lounge in 1979. They are considered an early Australian new wave band.
*Cigarettes and Alcohol by The Leftovers. Brisbane punk band from 1979. They were sometimes called the Fucken Leftovers but Discogs lists them for this track just as The Leftovers.
*Suspicious Minds by The Sports. April 1979 single from their Don’t Throw Stones album, their third in as many years. The band was fronted by Stephen Cummings who had been in The Pelaco Brothers with Joe Camilleri and a bunch of others.
*Hit and Run by Jo Jo Zep and the Falcons. 1979 single from their first Mushroom records album, Screaming Targets. Joe’s mum called him Zep and eventually he found that Jo Jo went best with that as a stage name.
*Highway to Hell by AC/DC. The title track from their 1979 album, their last with Bon Scott.
*Lonesome Loser by The Little River Band. Daryl and Rick were joined by Dutch migrant Beeb Birtles in Zoot, before he went on to become a founding member of the Little River Band. He co-wrote this track for their 1979 album, First Under the Wire, which was their fifth.
Touch and Go by Emerson, Lake & Powell. Sometimes abbreviated as ELPowell, were an English rock band, an offshoot or variant lineup of Emerson, Lake & Palmer, that released one official, self-titled studio album in 1986, including this track. Keith Emerson and Greg Lake had planned to re-form the original ELP in 1985 but drummer Carl Palmer was unavailable because of contractual obligations to Asia. After auditioning a series of drummers unwilling to commit to the band, they approached Cozy Powell, a longtime friend of Emerson’s, to replace him.
It doesn’t have to be this way by The Blow Monkeys. From their third album, She was only a grocer’s daughter, released in 1987. I assume that’s Margaret Thatcher in the grocer’s daughter reference…
Kid by The Pretenders. From their 1980 self-titled debut. It was also a 1979 single released prior to the album. Chrissie herself wrote it.
The Ones that Love you Lead you Nowhere by DelAmitri. From Change Everything, their 1992 album…I believe it was their third.
