Kyrie by Mr Mister. From their 1985 album Welcome to the Real World.
Honey Honey by Abba. Request.
She Has a Way by Bobby O. His 1982 debut single. He is Bobby Orlando, the guy who gave us The Flirts.
You Might Think by The Cars. From Heartbeat City, the Cars’5th studio album and released in 1984. They also performed it at LiveAid in July 1985 and so it probably appears on that album too…
Faith by George Michael. Request.
Electricity by OMD. Late 70s-80s synth-pop band, originally from the Wirral Peninsula in the UK – also where my partner’s mum is from. This is their 1979 debut single, notable for having been recorded numerous times..and for never becoming a hit.
Love is the Drug by Roni Griffith. She was one of the original Coconuts in the 1980s group Kid Creole and the Coconuts until she went solo under producer Bobby O. This was a 1982 single, one of her last before she turned to Christian music in 1983.
Take a Chance on Me by Waterfront Home. 1983 single from yet another Bobby O. project.
Native Love (Step by Step) by Divine. The original 12” version from 1982 from this gay artist. The album version is from his debut, My First Album. Glenn Milstead died at just 42 of an enlarged heart exacerbated by his obesity.
Aussies: songs with food items in the title…
*Pizza to Go by Where’s the Pope? From Straightedge Holocaust from 1988, their second album. They were a hardcore punk band from Adelaide formed in 1985 with mainstays Frank Pappagalo on vocals and Robert Stafford on bass guitar.
*Under the Milky Way by The Church: 1988 hit from a band that actually formed in Canberra! This one charted in the US after having been dropped by their US label for a flop earlier.
*Guns and Butter by Do Re Mi. 1986 single and follow up to their biggest hit Man Overboard. Also appeared on 1987 album Adultery. The band featured Deborah Conway.
*Onion Skin by Boom Crash Opera. First track on 1989’s These Here Are Crazy Times.
*Baked Beans by Mother Goose. From their 1977 debut album, Stuffed. Originally the boys were from Dunedin, NZ but moved here to make it big, including recording this album. They were HUGE in the seventies and such bands as Cold Chisel, Men at Work, The Angels and Midnight Oil all started by opening for Mother Goose. Later they moved to LA and then NY but returned to Oz to tour with their next albums. I’m counting them as Aussie cuz they lived here when this single was recorded and released…
*Wedding Cake Island by Midnight Oil. Wedding Cake Island is an island off Coogee Beach, Sydney, which protects the beach from most swells. The most probable source of the name is the shape of the island – it resembles a wedding cake. Another theory is that bird droppings on the island gave the appearance of icing on a cake. Midnight Oil lead singer, Peter Garrett was a local resident in 1975 when they first released the track; it was also re-released in 1980 on the EP Bird Noises.
Spotlight by Madonna. Request.
Falling (The Twin Peaks song) by Julee Cruise. Request.
Toast by Streetband. Request. To go with the Baked Beans…
Lust or Love by Malibu. 1986 disco track from yet another Bobby O. production.
African Reggae by The Nina Hagen Band. 1979 single from the 1980 album Unbehagen, the second and last album by the Nina Hagen Band before the solo career of singer Nina Hagen. The German album title translates to Discomfort but can be seen as a pun on the band name.
