God Shuffled His Feet by Crash Test Dummies: off the 1993 album by the same name by Canadian band CTD. They’re from Winnipeg, Manitoba – who knew the Canadian prairies could produce such an interesting sound!

Baby I don’t Care by Transvision Vamp. 1989 single release, the first from their second album, Velveteen. They were a British band, formed in 1986 by Nick Christian Sayer and Wendy James.

Shining Moon by Cowboy Junkies. Canadian alternative country/blues/rock band. The group was formed in Toronto in 1985. This track is from Whites Off Earth Now!! their 1986 debut album.

Fumbling Towards Ecstasy by Sarah McLachlan. Fellow Canadian, title track from album released in October 1993 in Canada, and in early 1994 in the rest of the world. The album was an immediate hit in Canada, where McLachlan was already an established star. Over the next two years, it became her breakthrough album internationally as well.

Run to You by Bryan Adams. Written by Canadian Adams for Blue Oyster Cult, they turned it down, as did 38 Special, so he recorded it himself and it was included on 1984’s album, Reckless. It’s now one of his biggest hits – bummer for those other 2 bands!

Showdown at Big Sky by Robbie Robertson. Canadian self-titled album from 1987 – his first solo attempt. He is best known for his membership as the guitarist and primary songwriter within The Band. He was ranked 78th in Rolling Stone magazine’s list of the 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time.

Breaks my Heart by Grapes of Wrath. Canadian band that 2 of my friends saw live during spring break in the late ‘80s. They came back to campus with some vinyl and we played it on the radio all the time. This is for Kris and Stephanie, who aren’t listening, but anyway…

+In Hollywood by The Village People. They aren’t all gay, but several are, including Randy Jones the cowboy.

Somebody Must Have Loved you Right Last Night by Tanya Tucker. From her 10^th studio album, Tear Me Apart, released in 1979.

Aussie food bands:

*Apartment by Custard. Originally known as Custard Gun, formed in Brisbane in 1990, featuring Ed Kuepper.

*Charlie by Pineapples from the Dawn of Time. From their only album, Shocker, released in 1987 I believe.

*Alone with You by Sunnyboys. Appeared on the band’s 1980 self-titled and independently released 4-track 7″ EP on Phantom Records. The initial pressing of 1,000 copies sold out in two weeks. Named after an ice lolly…

*Sabotage by Sardine v. 1980, 81 or 82 single produced by Lobby Loyde. The year seems to be quite a confusing bit of trivia depending on whether you believe Wikipedia, YouTube or the Sanity database… The band formed around Ian Rilen, also of Rose Tattoo, and his partner Stephanie.

*That Word (LOVE) by Rockmelons. They had two Top Five hit singles from their 1992 album, Form I Planet, “Ain’t No Sunshine” and “That Word (L.O.V.E.)”, both sung by Deni Hines. The associated album, Form I Planet peaked at #3 on the albums chart in 1992.

*Howzat by Sherbet. Guitarist Harvey James died in Jan 2011 after a 6 month battle with lung cancer. This was their biggest hit, from 1976.

+Quiche Lorraine by the B52s. From 1980s Wild Planet, their second album, recorded in the Bahamas and was their first experimentation with electronic drums. They have to be one of the gayest bands ever, with 4 of the original 5 having come out at some point…just waiting on Cindy Wilson.

+The Crying Game by Boy George. From the 1992 soundtrack to the film. The film was released in the US after I’d moved to Hungary so I didn’t see it for years afterwards and had NO idea what was coming… Fantastic twist!

+James Bondage by Pansy Division. An all-gay punk band from the Queercore genre of the early 1990s. They were formed by Jon Ginoli and Chris Freeman in SF and eventually recruited a number of other gay musicians…all wanting to show that gay male music could be more than disco. This was written by Freeman for their second album, Deflowered…though this is the 7” single version

Crash by The Primitives. From their 1988 album, Lovely. This is the best known track of this English band from Coventry.

Since Yesterday by Strawberry Switchblade. Scottish all-female band formed in Glasgow in 1981 by Jill Bryson and Rose McDowall, best known for this track, released in 1985.

Camouflage by Stan Ridgway. From the man who brought us Mexican Radio’s band Wall of Voodoo, this is a solo track from 1985. It was also on his solo debut album, The Big Heat, from 1986.
