Peng! 33 by Stereolab. The title track to their 1992 debut album…German onomatopoeia for a loud pop or bang sound. The band included Australian Mary Hansen but is considered a British-French outfit due to the 2 founders, Tim Gane and Lætitia Sadier.
Black Hole Sun by Soundgarden. 1994, their first big hit. For Chris Cornell, who committed suicide this week.
Hunted Down by Soundgarden. Their 1987 debut.
Into the Night by Julee Cruise. Request. For Twin Peaks fans…it’s back!
Just Like Jessie James by Cher. Request. For her 71st birthday.
The Apple Stretching by Grace Jones. For her 69th birthday yesterday. Request.
Like a Prayer by Madonna. Request.
Everyone Thinks He Looks Daft by The Wedding Present. From their 1987 debut, George Best. It’s been labelled the ‘definitive’ UK Indie offering by one critic.
Fade Into You by Mazzy Star. Request.
Aussie fire songs to warm us up as nights are getting cold:
*Playing with Fire by Lisa Edwards. Soundtrack to Dead End Drive-In from 1986 about a teenage couple trapped in a drive-in theater which is really a concentration camp for societal rejects. The largely punk inmates are fed a steady diet of junk food, New Wave music, drugs, and bad movies. It stars Ned Manning and Natalie McCurry as the captive couple, and Peter Whitford as the manager of the drive-in. There’s a real Laura Branigan-ness to this tune!
*I can Feel the Fire by Renee Geyer. 1982 single from her 1981 album, So Lucky.
*Everything’s on Fire by Hunters & Collectors. 1986 single from Human Frailty, their 4th studio album, not counting an EP, but the first one to do well on the Aussie charts.
*Touch The Fire by Icehouse. One of only 2 single releases from their 1989 compilation album Great Southern Land.
*Wild Fire by Rabbit. Originally “The Cherries” was an Australian hard rock band from Newcastle, Australia. The band was formed in 1973 by Mark Tinson (guitar, vocals), Phil Screen (drums) and Jim Porteus (bass). Vocalist Greg Douglas joined in 1974 and was replaced in October of that year by Dave Evans, formerly of AC/DC. This 1976 single, backed by Bad Girls on the B-side, was also included in their second album, 1976’s Too Much Rock N’ Roll.
*Cool Fire by Beasts of Bourbon. From the 1990 album ‘Black Milk’, their third studio album. Guitarist Spencer P Jones and vocalist Tex Perkins are the band’s steady members with a rotating mix of others over the years.
*Blue Day by Mi-Sex. For their guitarist, Kevin Stanton, who died this week from a congenitive spinal issue.
*But You Don’t Care by Mi-Sex.
Searching for Mr Right by Young Marble Giants. From their 1980 debut and lone album from Rough Trade, Colossal Youth. They’re Welsh…not a whole lotta pop coming outta there!
Temptation by New Order. 1982 single release. Recorded as a 12” single, both the 12” and 7” were released, and neither was ever included on a studio album.
Up the hill and Down the Slope by The Loft. 1985, from East London. This is their second single release after forming in 1980.
Son of a Gun by The Vaselines. Their 1987 debut, later covered by Nirvana. Another Scottish outfit from Glasgow.
