Don’t Walk Away by Toni Childs: This is the first track on her 1988 debut album, Union.

Faces by Lene Lovich. From No Man’s Land, 1982. Her third album.

Mama by Genesis. First single from their self-titled album released in 1983, their 12^th album! Their biggest UK hit, but didn’t do well either here or the US.

Take That by Anna Domino. 1985 single release from this Tokyo-born indie rock artist – military brat, real name Anna Virginia Taylor. She’s worked with many others including The The, The 6ths, Virginia Astley, etc…

Christine by Siousxie and the Banshees: second single from the band’s third album Kaleidoscope, 1980.

The Spaceship is Over There by Vicious Pink. 1986 track from this British duo from Leeds, England (Josephine Warden and Brian Moss). They formed in 1981 and were active until 1986, when their self-titled album containing this track was released.

Moving to Florida by Butthole Surfers. Released on 2 different albums, depending on where you bought it (Psychic… Powerless… Another Man’s Sac (1984) in the UK or Rembrandt Pussyhorse (1986)in the US).

Gay Aussies …cuz I can’t believe I haven’t done this yet! But I do know why…it wasn’t easy!

*I Still Call Australia Home by Peter Allen. 1980 song that has been redone a million and a half times by Australians and Australian companies to prove their Aussiness… He died in 1992 of an AIDS-related throat cancer; he was 48. He was married to Liza Minnelli but was of course as gay as they come!

*Inside my Kitchen by Tiddas. 1992 title track to their first EP. Lou Bennett started her musical career with her uncle’s band “The Shades”, before later joining Richard Frankland’s band “Djaambi”, where she met Sally Dastey and Amy Saunders—Bennett, Dastey and Saunders later formed Tiddas. Bennett is a Yorta Yorta/Dja Dja Wurrung woman from Echuca. Her autobiographical show, Show us Your Tiddas, has scenes of her coming out to her family…I’ve not seen it so I don’t know how it went!

*Like a Ghost by Ignatius Jones. In April 1982, Ignatius Jones issued his debut solo single, “Like a Ghost”, which was written by The Church’s frontman Steve Kilbey. Prior to this solo career, he was the front man of Jimmy and the Boys. More recently he’s been an artistic director, including the 2000 Sydney Olympics and 2002 Gay Games, where he announced that he’s never had to come out because he was never in.

*Ambiguous Girl by Sweet Jayne. Out-lesbian Cris Bonacci’s (she and Samantha Fox were partners for awhile back in the 90s) first long-term professional commitment was with the hard rock band Sweet Jayne, which she co-founded in the mid-70s. The band developed a sizeable local following in Melbourne and recorded several demoes and an EP between 1977 and 1983. This is the first track on their 1979 self-titled EP.

*Foolin’ Around by Beccy Cole. This is her 1992 debut single. She was married for awhile to a bloke but came out in 2012 on an Australian tv show and has been surprised and pleased by the warm welcome she’s continued to receive in the country music scene.

*Dicks Don’t Grow on Trees by Robyn Archer. From her second album, Take Your Partners For… The Ladies Choice, from 1978. She’s listed on a site of gay and lesbian Australian musicians…but I can’t find any evidence of her coming out anywhere. She wasn’t born an Archer so I think there’s a hetero marriage in there somewhere too…but my partner assures me she is a lesbian so those 2 sources are enough. Anybody know for sure?

The Big Sky by Kate Bush. 1986 single from Hounds of Love, her 5^th studio album. It was the 4^th and final single from that album.

Monkey gone to heaven by The Pixies. 1989 single, their second, and it came off Doolittle, their second album, also from 1989.

Dolphin’s Spurt by Minny Pops. They are an Amsterdam-based new wave/electronic/art punk band, associated with the Ultra post-punk movement in the Netherlands and the Factory Records label in the UK. They had their first wave 1978-85 and then started up again 3 years ago, putting out new material … not just nostalgia touring. This was their first single for Factory records in 1979.
