Shy Boy by Bananarama. Second single from their 1983 debut album Deep Sea Skiving.
Lesley Gore tribute requested by Greg:
Immortality by Lesley Gore. Request. 1975.
Out Here on My Own by Irene Cara. Written by Gore & her brother for the Fame soundtrack, nominated for an Oscar. Request.
You Don’t Own Me by Joan Jett. Request. Gore’s original was 1963. It was the Blow Monkeys who did it for Dirty Dancing.
It’s my Party by Dave Stewart & Barbara Gaskin. 1981 remake. Request.
Sweet Dreams by Eurythmics. Request.
Overflowing by Jewel Bass. Request.
Work it Out by Breakwater. From their self-titled debut album from 1978. They only released one other album, in 1980. They were from Philly and played together for more than 9 years despite the relative lack of recordings.
Hold On by En Vogue. Request.
Hot in the City by Billy Idol. A 1982 single released from his self-titled album, which was his second album release.
Aussies – who lived outside Oz as kids (not the UK)
*Tip of my Tongue by Diesel. Released in February 1992 and became his highest charting single when it reached #4 in Australia. Diesel was born Mark Lizotte in 1966 in Fall River, Massachusetts, United States, and immigrated to Australia with his family, in November 1971. His father, a professional saxophonist, moved his family to Perth, where young Mark grew up and started his music career.
*Fade Away by Matt Finish. Title track from their 1981 live EP recorded at Sydney’s PACT Theatre. Matt Moffitt, one of the founders and leading men of the group, spent part of his childhood in NY.
*Rooms for the Memory by Michael Hutchence. From the 1987 soundtrack to Dogs in Space. He was born in Sydney but spent a good amount of his childhood living in Hong Kong, where his dad worked.
*Fall of Rome by James Reyne. He was born in Lagos, Nigeria where his father was an English diplomat. He arrived in Australia as a kid…can’t find exactly how old but definitely younger than 10. This was his first solo single and came out in 1987…though he released a duet with Lin Buckfield from The Electric Pandas 2 years earlier.
*California by Flash and the Pan. Harry Vanda was born Johannes Hendrikus Jacob van den Berg and lived the first 16 years of his life in the Netherlands. George Young also grew up elsewhere…but in Scotland so isn’t my main concern in this 6-pack. This is a 1978 single from their studio-only band active from 1977-92.
*How I Feel Tonight by Beeb Birtles and Graham Goble. Beeb Birtles was born Gerard Bertelkamp in the Netherlands, migrated to Australia as a 10 year old. This is a 1980 single from these 2 Little River Band mainstays, who recorded an album and three singles together without the others. This was the final single, released in 1980.
Let’s Do It by Kadenza. 1982 single release from this British soul group. Considered their rarest release. Though the band released only 3 singles between 1982 and 1984 so a Kadenza release at all is rare… All 3 had different lead singers so don’t sound much alike.
Right back where we Started From by Maxine Nightingale. 1975 (UK) 1976 (US) title track to her debut album. It reached number 4 here in Australia, 2 in the US, but failed to chart in the UK. It was prominently featured in the 1977 film Slap Shot as well.
Private World by Side Effect. Disco and jazz-funk band that recorded between 1972 and 1982. The group was formed by founder and leader Augie Johnson in Los Angeles, California in 1972. This was a track on their 1977 album Goin’ Bananas – their 4th album.
Turn Me Loose by Loverboy. Released on Canadian band Loverboy’s eponymous debut album in 1980, and as a single in 1981. The band formed in Calgary in 1980.
