Tonight we discussed a very important topic that I believe does not get enough attention. Last week we celebrated Intersex Awareness Week so tonight we are going to learn more about what it means to be intersex, some of the issues this community is facing and how we can better support members of the intersex youth community.
My students often ask me what the ‘I’ stands for in LGBTQIA and I find it is often the part of our acronym that people don’t always find easy to explain or define. ‘I’ stands for intersex. Actually 1.7% of the population are intersex, which is the same percentage of the population that has red hair. So chances are someone in your life is intersex.
Tonight I was joined by a wonderful human Alex who is just 16 years old and has already been such a wonderful role model for the community!
Thanks so much to Alex for answering our questions and sharing his story!
