Red Light Dark Room – Gemma-Rose Turnbull

Arts, Health, News & Politics, Society & Culture

Whilst it is reported to be the oldest profession known to mankind, there are few people in our modern western culture that are as marginalised, oppressed and stigmatised as street sex workers.

Illegal, dangerous and contentious, its hardly a career path that one enters into by choice. Yet for those working the streets its about survival. These are women who have families, friendships, hobbies, skills and dreams. But – these are women we only ever see depicted in the darkest light.
One women hopes to change that.

Today we speak to a highly awarded photo journalist who has spent the last 12 months embedded with St Kilda’s street sex workers. Based at the St Kilda Gatehouse, a drop-in centre for street Sex Workers, our guest today has formed friendships with people who have spent a lifetime pushing others away.

Whilst teaching creative and photographic skills to women who thought their only talent was sex, she has gained a unique insight to the challenges faced by sex workers. www.redlightdarkroom.com
