State Of Emergency

Arts, Health, News & Politics, Society & Culture

The Victorian State Emergency Service is one of those agencies that one really hopes to only ever see on TV…. There are over five and a half thousand committed and highly dedicated men and women in the Victorian SES. These amazing people volunteer their time to respond to crisis in an instant – 24 hours a day – 7 days a week – 365 days a year.
The SES is responsible for coordinating responses to floods, storms and earthquakes and they operate the largest network of road rescue in Australia.
If a tree comes crashing through the roof in a storm, its the SES who will remove it. If someone goes missing during a bushwalk, the SES are there scouting alongside the police. And sadly, its the SES who have to scrape up what is left of the 300 or so road fatalities on Victorias roads each year.
In 2006, the Victorian SES was made a statutory Authority and since then, the person responsible for overseeing the safety of the Communities of Victoria is the CEO for the SES, Mary Barry and she joins us Word For Word.
