The incomparable Dan Savage

News & Politics, Society & Culture

dan_savage

Dan Savage is a Seattle-based sex advice columnist and the host of the Savage Lovecast. With thousands of readers and listeners, and more than a few detractors, he’s built a national profile with his frank advice on sex and relationships, his fearless liberal political activism, his status as a champion for the rights of the LGBTI community – not to mention his characteristic profane charm.

Even if you think you haven’t heard of him, chances are you’ve heard of the It Gets Better Project.

In 2010 after a spate of suicides by bullied gay youth, he founded the campaign to reach out to isolated LGBTI teenagers. The project struck a nerve, kicking off a truly global movement with thousands of videos pouring in with messages of hope and support.

Dan’s the author of a handful of books including The Kid, which documented the adoption of his son with his husband Terry in 1998, and The Commitment.

His latest is American Savage – it’s a series of provocative and uncompromising essays on everything from gay marriage to gun control and the healthcare debate.

Dan Savage was invited out to Australia to speak at the Festival of Dangerous Ideas about monogamy (or monogamish-amy) and visited the studios of JOY 94.9, where he talked sex, relationships, gay marriage and Julia Gillard and everything in between with Jacob Holman and Christian Vega.
