Cameroon: International outcry against “Gay Hate Day”

Africa and the Middle East

Cameroon flag“The most common violation in jail is rape. If people know you are homosexual, you are always [the] victim of rape by the other inmates….It is not easy to be in jail if you are gay in Cameroon,” said Yves, executive director at Alternatives Cameroon. Despite jail being hard, Yves dismisses the rumour of a “Gay Hate Day” organised by Cameroonian Youth Rally (RJC). He discusses the difficulties of living as a gay man, including physical violence. Despite being out at work, he still has to hide his identity. He also speaks passionately about the fact that homosexuality is not a product of the “white man”, but is an African concept as well.
