South Korea: Mainstream press embraces homophobia

Asia/Pacific

South Korean Flag“This current administration has been extremely homophobic and anti-human rights… The major mainstream press has been kissing up to this administration and so they have been more noticeably homophobic and discriminatory as well,” says Joseph Kim (pseudonym) of Chingusai in South Korea.

But Mr Kim also celebrates the hard work of Chingusai in changing Korean society: “When we had our first pride parade in 2001, that was a very shocking event for Korean society.”

Due to Chingusai’s efforts, the National Human Rights Commission Act now includes a clause stating, “people may not be discriminated against based on their sexual orientation.” Learn more on W3JOY’s South Korea webpage.
