Mexico: New legislation allows gay blood donation

North and South America

Mexican Flag“It’s great that we have this law that permits all gay people to donate blood,” says Fernanado Estrada of Guadalajara, Mexico. Fernando is pleased that in December 2012, Mexico reversed this law. It was the first North American country to do so.

Still, not everything is rosy. “That’s how life is in Mexico,” he reflects on the discrimination he felt two years ago when he tried to donate blood. He comments that Mexican culture is very conservative, despite new legislation.

“It is an old-fashioned way of seeing families” cautions Fernando Estrada as he comments on passage of same-sex marriage laws in Mexico City. Fernando joins W3JOY for a lively discussion of the recent pro-gay blood donation laws, the influence of the Catholic Church, LGBT mental health issues and more. Find out more on W3JOY’s Mexico page.
