Canada: Working beyond liberal legislation

North and South America

Canadian flag“At the same time as being a leader, I don’t think we can exactly rest on our laurels here in Canada,” says Brent Chamberlain, Executive Director of Pride at Work Canada.

Canada’s had very progressive laws around workplace discrimination, adoption and same-sex marriage, but Brent explains that “…it’s not always the case that legislative equality has come with cultural norms around acceptance of LGBT.”

He tells W3JOY that the public sector and the oil and gas industry are “major challenges” in the quest for LGBT equality.

Some Canadian organisations, on the other hand, have Chief Diversity Officers overseeing this change.

Brent is adamant, “It’s not something that’s nice to have, it’s an absolute must have.”
