Kyrgyzstan: Not quite right… progressive rights – yet there’s justified fear in the GLBTI community

Asia/Pacific

Kyrgyzstan, a landlocked and mountainous formerly Soviet state in Central Asia, is a leader in the region for LGBTI rights. But many issues remain.

The country has an active civil society, with 12 LGBTI related organisations working in the country. Same-sex relationships are legal and the capital of Bishkek has a vibrant gay scene.

Yet there is fear amongst the gay population. Documented reports of ongoing abuse and extortion targeting gay and bisexual men at the hands of police are being denied by the government. International pressure is mounting for these claims to be fully and impartially investigated.

We spoke with Human Rights Watch about their report titled “They Told Us We Deserved This: Police Violence Against Gay and Bisexual Men in Kyrgyzstan.”
