Zimbabwe: Mugabe, AIDS and hope

Africa and the Middle East

For over 25 years, Zimbabwe has been under the rule of President Robert Mugabe – a man that has called gay people “worse than pigs and dogs”.

With very oppressive laws against the LGBTIQ community, why is Zimbabwe not receiving the kind of attention that Russia or Uganda are experiencing for their anti-gay laws?

How does the LGBTIQ community get by – and even stage a Pride festival with a drag queen beauty pageant – all while dodging the police under Mugabe’s control?

There is one certainty though – that the power of one will end. What will happen to Zimbabwe when President Robert Mugabe dies?

We speak with Sarah – a Zimbabwe born national now living here in Melbourne – to discover the welcoming side of Zimbabwean culture and an LGBTIQ community that won’t give in.
