Africa: AIDS and Advocacy

Africa and the Middle East

Jed Horner, project director from Australian Human Rights Centre at the University of New South Wales joined World Wide Wave to discuss HIV and AIDS in Africa.

Growing up in South Africa, Horner has strong memories of the early days of HIV including the protests around anti-retroviral medications.

He discusses the differences within Africa – some countries suffering HIV denialism and others responding more proactively with anti-retroviral medicines. He outlines the impact of the criminalisation of homosexuality, how some countries reformed their laws to create a more welcoming environment to fight HIV and the horrifying impact of corrective rape.
