Horn Of Africa: Migration, sexuality and sexual health

Africa and the Middle East

World Wide Wave journeyed to Africa – in fact, the Horn of Africa to be precise. This is a peninsula located in the northeast of Africa comprising Eritrea, Djibouti, Ethiopia, Somalia and South Sudan.

How does the forced migration affect the sexual practices of refugees? What happens when asylum seekers are re-settled in Australia? What do the sexual cultures of Australian men and men in the Horn of Africa region have in common?

To understand gay life in the Horn of Africa, we spoke with Samuel Muchoki from the Australian Research Centre in Sex Health and Society at La Trobe University in Victoria. He has completed a Doctoral research project – Migration, Sexuality and Sexual health: Exploring the experiences of Horn of Africa men with refugee backgrounds.
