Nauru: Tiny country, big problems

Nauru is a country which many Australians know by name and see in the news regularly, but few know where it is, or the difficulties its people face.

This Pacific country seemingly courts controversy – be it refugees, poverty, corruption or political unrest outside its parliament.

  • Is there a place for an LGBTIQ community in this tiny island nation?
  • What made the Nauruan government so keen to accept Australia’s off-shore detention centre?
  • And, in this Refugee Week, what does that decision mean to LGBTIQ refugees fleeing persecution in other countries?

To give voice to the silence of LGBTIQ Nauruans, we spoke with Dr Paula Gerber from Kaleidoscope Australia Human Rights Foundation.

Find out more on World Wide Wave’s Nauru page.
