Samoa: Shades of Grey in Gender Identity

samoa_flagBroadcast – 31 May 2016

There are few countries in the world where being transgender is more culturally accepted than being gay or lesbian. We venture to one such country – and indeed one of Australia’s neighbours. We are off to the turquoise waters of Samoa.

  • How does Samoan culture explain its gender roles and how they came about?
  • If you are accepted in your local community, do you still need a space to participate in your queer culture?
  • What happens if your family declares a child as Fa’afafine but you just don’t fit in?

To help us understand gender identity in a country where shades of grey are the norm, we speak with Youmania from the Samoan Fa’afafine Association.
