USA: New insights into the impact of HIV on ageing

Flag_USABroadcast – 6 September 2016

Thirty years ago, those talking about HIV were speaking about survival – dealing with old age was not a problem that anyone considered. To show you just how far things have come in a relatively short period, we speak to an expert about new research on the effects of HIV on ageing.

  • Is this accelerated ageing due to the virus or the drugs we are using to fight it?
  • Could it be that HIV treatment centres could be used to improve general health in third world countries?
  • What could this research tell us about the way the human body ages?

Opening this Pandora’s box with us is Dr. Alan Landay, Head of the Department of Immunology at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago. He has been involved in HIV research for over 30 years, having performed some of the first immune evaluations of HIV infected haemophiliacs in 1982.
