Australia: Global Gays with Dennis Altman

australia_flagBroadcast – 22 November 2016

Even though Australia’s gay rights push had begun in a small way prior, it accelerated with the inspiration of the Stonewall Riots in the USA in 1969. One man was at the forefront of that push here in Australia – and has remained so ever since.

In 1971 he published his first book, Homosexual: Oppression and Liberation — often referred to as doing for LGBT rights what Germaine Greer’s The Female Eunuch did for women’s rights – and so he is well placed to answer complex international questions.

  • What role does momentum play in achieving LGBTI rights around the world?
  • Is there a universal ‘gay identity’?
  • What is Australia’s role in LGBTI rights on the world stage?

To critique how far we have come in global LGBT rights – and how far we have to go; we speak with a very special guest. An activist, historian, Q&A panellist, author, academic… and gay icon – Dennis Altman AM. Dennis is an Emeritus Professor and Professorial Fellow in Human Security at La Trobe University.
