USA: A year without sex for a good cause

Broadcast – 14 February 2017

Back in 1985 at the height of the AIDS epidemic, gay men were dying and blood was found to be the conduit of the disease. Immediately, bans were put in place around the globe on gay men donating blood.

Like Australia, the USA currently has a 12 month period without sex before a gay man can donate. But one young man is fighting that ban.

  • How did Australia influence the U.S. policy on blood donations?
  • In what way did the Orlando shooting influence the policy debate?
  • Could you last a whole year without sex of any kind?

In order to make a point, a 21 year old American took a year off from sex so he could not only donate blood, but also raise the profile of this discriminatory policy. Sharing his story with us is Jay Franzone, Director of Communications at the National Gay Blood Drive in USA.
