GERMANY: MEET THE FIRST GAY ACTIVIST IN THE MODERN WORLD

Europe, News & Politics

He has been called “The first gay man in world history.” He was a prolific writer and a lawyer. He has streets names after him and there is EVEN a festival in his honour.  He spoke passionately and publicly in defence of homosexuality at a time when the word didn’t even exist.

Don’t know his name?  Let me introduce you to Karl Heinrich Ulrichs from 19th Century Bavaria (or modern day Germany).

  • How did this mystery man survive in an era not yet ready for homosexuality?
  • What was ‘gay’ called before there was the term ‘gay’?
  • What does his radical legacy mean to modern day LGBTI rights?

To bringing us the story of the first known gay activist in the modern world, we were joined in the studio by Dr Douglas Pretsell who has just completed his thesis at La Trobe University on the legacy of Karl Heinrich Ulrichs.

Date of broadcast: October 24, 2017
