CAMBODIA: EYES OF ASIA ON PHNOM PENH

Asia/Pacific, News & Politics

cambodian flagIt’s an ancient culture with world famous temples and a history of colonisation.  But it’s also a country with a dark past – having virtually lost an entire generation to the genocide of its former leader, Pol Pot.  But now Cambodia is rebuilding a new future.  And pleasingly, the LGBTI community is a part of it.  So much so that last month they hosted the Asia conference of ILGA – the International Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual Trans and Intersex Association – the peak LGBTI rights organisation at the global level.

  • What is the significance of the Prime Minister speaking out against LGBTI discrimination?
  • It will surprise you to hear where in Cambodia Trans men particularly accepted.
  • And how is traditional Cambodian dance breaking down stereotypes around sexuality?

Giving us very different perspectives on LGBTI life in Cambodia, we speak with:

  •          Prum who started Cambodia’s first gay male dance troupe
  •          Lee from RoCK – Rainbow Community of Kampuchea, their leading LGBTI advocacy organisation (www.rockcambodia.org)
  •          And Impulse, a HIV organisation in the capital of Phnom Penh

Broadcast: 30 January, 2018
