COMMONWEALTH: GAYS AT THE GAMES

Asia/Pacific, News & Politics, Worldwide

For two weeks, sport-mad Australia will be glued to television, radio and social media for updates from the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games where Aussies often excel. One area that the Commonwealth does NOT excel in though is LGBTI rights. 70% of Commonwealth countries retain colonial-era sodomy laws that criminalise same-sex acts – that’s half of all countries in the world that still criminalise homosexuality. But some people are pushing for that to change.

  • How can this sporting showcase be used to influence change in the Commonwealth?
  • Who are the celebrities getting behind the project?
  • Why is elite sport one of the last frontiers for coming out?

Firing the starters gun on Gays in the Games was our guest Matt Hall, the Project Manager of Australia’s first Pride House, at the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games.

Broadcast: April 3, 2018
