EAST CARIBBEAN: STAY AND HIDE OR BE ME BUT FLEE

News & Politics, North and South America

We’ve spoken many times about the historic British sodomy laws and how they have spread throughout the world. Although Britain has updated their laws, the majority of countries that they colonised have kept these antiquated and discriminatory laws. No we take a look at what it is like to be LGBT in seven Eastern Caribbean countries: Antigua and Barbuda, Barbados, Dominica, Grenada, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines.

  • What do these countries have in common that is preventing a change to laws that prohibit same-sex conduct between consenting persons?
  • What is behind the macho and often violent anti-LGBT culture?
  • How brave do you need to be to stand up as an LGBTI activist in these countries?

Getting our reggae on to challenge the homophobia, we were joined tonight by Boris Dittrich, Advocacy Director of the LGBT Rights Program at Human Rights Watch (www.hrw.org) – authors of a new report on the East Caribbean titled: I Have to Leave to Be Me.

Broadcast: April 10, 2018
