AUSTRALIA: INCLUSIVE DISASTER RESPONSE FOR LGBTI COMMUNITIES

Asia/Pacific, News & Politics

It is said that in life, there are only two certainties – death and taxes!  Another certainty, which is most often unpredictable, is natural disasters.  Be it earthquakes, bushfires, floods or cyclones, they can devastate entire communities in minutes.

  • Is the impact of LGBTI people after a disaster the same as for the general population?
  • What can be done to ensure inclusivity for diverse members of a community during the trauma following a natural disaster?
  • Given the tools and the framework to respond appropriately, will religious-based disaster response organisations be willing to adopt an inclusive approach?

We first spoke to our guest back in 2012 when he has just begun exploring how disasters affect LGBTI communities. Now returning with news of how his years of persistent research have turned into actions, we are joined by Professor Dale Dominey-Howes – Professor of Hazard and Risk Sciences at the University of Sydney.
