THAILAND: ASIA-PACIFIC DISASTERS AND THE LGBTI COMMUNITY

Asia/Pacific, News & Politics

We’ve spoken before about the added challenges of being LGBTI after a disaster – a tsunami, floods, bushfires, cyclones – take your pick.  And pleasingly Australia has taken a lead in this area.  But things become a great deal harder when you start a conversation across the entire Asia-Pacific region as happened last week in Bangkok.

  • Are large humanitarian organisations open to changing their disaster response strategies in order to be more inclusive?
  • How do you negotiate accessing help in countries where homosexuality is still illegal?
  • What was Australia’s role in bringing together this regional discussion?

Exploring resilience in the Asia-Pacific LGBTI community, we were joined by Ryan Figueiredo, Deputy Director of APCOM – advocating for Men who have Sex with Men and Trans people across the Asia-Pacific region.

Broadcast: June 12, 2018
