WORLD: CASTER SEMENYA RUNNING FOR INTERSEX RIGHTS

News & Politics, Worldwide

Of the L, the G, the B, the T and the I, it is often the Intersex members of the rainbow community who are least heard of and most misunderstood. That became brutally clear when a record-breaking South African athlete by the name of Caster Semenya was told by the highest court in athletics that she must take testosterone-reducing drugs if she wishes to continue running as a woman.

  • How do you assess if someone is “not female enough” to run in a women’s running race?
  • What are the grey areas of the court ruling that will ensure this issue does not go away quickly?
  • Is there an up-side for the Intersex community coming out of this incident?

Limbering up with us for the race that Intersex people are determined to win was Leisl Gerntholtz, Executive Director of Women’s Rights at Human Rights Watch (www.hrw.org).
