Jamaica: A Dangerous Place to be LGBT

Téa BraunIt’s been named one of the most dangerous places in the world to be LGBT. It’s a former British colony that has retained the infamous colonial-era sodomy laws. But even beyond the laws, many people describe a culture of toxic masculinity and widespread homophobia. Welcome to Jamaica.

But is Jamaica finally being held to account? The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights has ruled that their laws against the “abominable crime of buggery” and acts of “gross indecency” effectively led to state-sanctioned violence against LGBTIQ Jamaicans. And pro-bono lawyer group, the Human Dignity Trust, was right there with local activists. Téa Braun from the Human Dignity Trust joins us in this podcast.
