Belgium: Live-cross from the Out Games

Europe

Welcome to the land of marriage equality. In it you will find a human rights conference, a pride march and the World Out Games.

For centuries, Antwerp has been a liberal city, and Alderman Philip Heylen is proud of this tradition. And he continues to campaign for equality worldwide. “Article 60 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights should be changed so it allows same-sex people the right to have families,” said the Alderman.

Australia had a fantastic showing at the World Games (including World Wide Wave’s own Matt M. bringing home the gold in hockey).  And the Belgians were fantastic hosts. Dennis from Cavaria discusses his organisation’s strategies for passing gay marriage:

“The movement was very smart, we first introduced gay marriage. Then we had a period where people got used to that idea. Then after a few years, we went back to the government and asked to introduce adoption. I think because we did that in two steps that there was little resistance.”

Find out more about this liberal utopia on W3JOY’s Belgium homepage.
