Mongolia: Defying the trends of the region

Mongolia’s LGBTI community is slowly coming out of hiding.

Coming from a nomadic and very masculine cultural background and influenced by years under Socialist USSR, Mongolia has made very fast progress in laws to decriminalise homosexuality and allow LGBTI people to live their lives.

Yet most LGBTI people remain hidden. Still, it is a country making remarkable progress in a region where LGBTI rights are going backwards.

In speaking with Mongolia’s LGBT Centre, we hear about Mongolia’s first Pride Week, support of the international community and the special role that Australia has played in raising issues of LGBTI people in Mongolia.
