Nigeria: LGBTI rights at the mercy of politics, evangelism & Islamic fundamentalism

While the world was busy berating Russia and Uganda for their anti-gay laws, Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan, quickly and quietly passed sweeping laws against same-sex attracted people.

Under the guise of a bill to outlaw same sex marriage, the laws also impose heavy prison terms for witnessing a same-sex marriage or union, public showings of same-sex attraction and anyone who participates in LGBT organisations.

The laws are so broad in their definition; they are likely to lead to the arbitrary arrest of gay people, extortion and blackmail, police intimidation and corruption. It will also hinder Nigeria’s ability to battle HIV, which is especially significant given the country has the world’s third highest number of people living with HIV/AIDS.

We speak with Human Rights Watch in Africa about what these laws mean for LGBTI people in Nigeria.
