Nepal: Courts leading the way

Asia/Pacific

Nepal is a country which, on the surface, has quite an impressive record of positive legal changes for LGBTIQ people. Most have taken place in a very short period of time since 2007, led by the Nepalese courts. Nepal was also one of the first countries in Asia to make provision for a third gender.

But what does that really mean on the streets and in the villages of Nepal? Discrimination against LGBTIQ people is still widely reported. The number of people changing their identity card to show their third gender is reportedly only three.

As the United Nations Human Rights Committee prepares its 5 yearly report on Nepal, Kaleidoscope Australia Human Rights Foundation has lent its support and know-how to local Nepalese groups to ensure their voices are heard.

We speak with Dr Douglas Pretsell and Dr Paula Gerber about their submission to the United Nations about gay rights and life in Nepal.
