Slovakia: Bringing change by coming out with your family

Europe

Some simple rules:

1. Wear comfortable, preferably closed footwear, something that allows you to run well.
2. Bring a plastic bottle of water as it can help get tear gas out of your eyes.
3. Have emergency numbers ready on speed dial.

Sound simple? Those are the instructions for Pride listed on Slovakia’s website. It’s a central European country that’s only had five pride marches to date; and these marches have a history of violence.

But Romana Schlesinger, spokesperson for Rainbow Pride Bratislava, remains positive:

“We chose the motto for the pride: ‘Come out with your families’. And it was our most successful pride yet.”

The new law does not clash with the EU law, but it does make Schlesinger angry:

“This year was very special because we had to react on the ‘going backwards’ of the law”

“They don’t understand what we are talking about, the majority of the people, they are very influenced by traditional values”

Slovakia may have a long way to go, but the Pride parade was the best yet and they have high hopes for the future.
