India: Gay one day, in the closet the next

In 2009, the Delhi High Court overturned an 1860 British colonial law that had criminalised homosexuality for generations. India’s gay community celebrated their new found freedom. But the victory was short lived. The law was reinstated after a shock decision by the Supreme Court in 2013.

What is it like to be legally gay one day and a criminal the next? And with the winning party of this year’s Indian elections stating they have no appetite to again decriminalise being gay, is this the end of the fight for LGBT rights – or has it just lit a fire in the bellies of India’s gay community?

To understand gay life in India, we spoke with Vivek Anand and young lesbian turned activist, Shruta, from The Humsafar Trust.
