Kiribati: Are the winds of change blowing?

kiribati_flagBroadcast – 1 November 2016

Following on from the 2016 LGBTI Pacific Youth Forum in Sydney, hosted by Kaleidoscope Australia, we profile the LGBTI rights and life in some of our lesser known Pacific neighbours. In the tiny island nation of Kiribati, advocates are learning how to fight for legal change while gearing up to change laws with government officers providing some initial support.

  • Is the low level government support an indication of the winds of change?
  • Why is it better being lesbian than gay in Kiribati?
  • What did advocates take away from their time at the Pacific Youth Forum?

To cruise around the gay rights of the Pacific Island country of Kiribati, we speak with Tebeio Tamton from BIMBA – a support and human rights association for gay, bisexuals and trans women in Kiribati.
